Alpha in cash call to repay Greek state aid

Alpha Bank on Monday followed the example of rivals across Europe and announced a €986m ($1.47bn) rights issue to repay state aid, paving the way for other Greek banks to follow its lead.

Marinos Yannopoulos, Alpha’s finance director, said: “We’ve seen the reaction in the market place to other European banks exiting government support and so we thought we should open the way for Greek banks to exit the Greek scheme.”
