Confusion surrounds industrial policy

Lord Mandelson on Wednesday sought to explain the government’s apparently confused and fast-changing policy on bailing out recession-hit companies, telling a City audience he was “neither indifferent to the particular needs of situations like this, nor am I a pushover”.

The business secretary emphasised the “very close calls” ministers were being forced to make in trading off demands for taxpayer cash against threats of job losses or company closures.
