No matter what prison term Judge Denny Chin hands down on Monday to Bernard Madoff, the disgraced former broker will be receiving in effect a life sentence.

At 71, Mr Madoff is likely to die in prison regardless of whether he receives the statutory maximum of 150 years for running a $65bn “Ponzi” scheme that reeled in thousands of victims from around the world.
