In late spring, they sprout up out of nowhere in the most unlikely locations across Budapest – in the courtyards of derelict apartment blocks, in school dormitories empty for the summer, or in the forecourts of closed factories.
These makeshift bars stay open for the summer, attracting young people from across the city and beyond – to the consternation of elderly neighbours furious about their lost sleep – only to vanish from the cityscape come October, when the nights grow too cold.
