For a few years now, US homeowners skilfully blocked out all the noise about a bubble in home prices. They could be forgiven for ignoring the latest reports, given all the conflicting accounts of what is happening.
Alan Greenspan, the former US Federal Reserve chairman who knows a thing or two about bubbles, told an audience in Washington on Monday that the worst of a US housing slump was already over. Talk about a soft landing.
