GM seeks ‘self-help’ on road to recovery

When General Motors held its annual meeting in early June, senior managers were well aware that soaring fuel prices and the US housing crisis were scaring away buyers, especially of its most profitable big pick-up trucks and sport-utility vehicles.

What they did not fully appreciate was the growing nervousness in capital markets about the financial condition of the world’s biggest carmaker.
