Premier defends Northern Rock handling

Gordon Brown on Sunday defended government handling of the Northern Rock crisis and the system of banking regulation that he put in place in 1997.

The prime minister said the system, which splits banking regulation between the Bank of England, City regulator the Financial Services Authority, and the chancellor, was working well.
