Laugh at the lessons of Looney Tunes if you dare

Similes should be treated with care. Last week, in an FT Short View column, I likened the credit markets to Wile E. Coyote, the hapless character from the old Road Runner cartoons.

The coyote would run off a cliff, and keep running until he stopped and looked down. Only then, with a look of resignation on his face, would he fall.
