The British Airways jet that crash-landed at Heathrow Airport was about 600ft above the suburbs of west London and only seconds from touchdown when the engine controls suddenly failed to respond to the autopilot commands.

The short initial report from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch of the Department for Transport, published last night, said Thursday’s flight BA038 from Beijing had been uneventful until its fateful final seconds.
