Hungary's Socialists select modernising premier

Hungary's ruling Socialist party yesterday made a dramatic break with the past and defied the party's senior leaders by choosing as prime minister a modernising social democrat, who uses UK prime minister Tony Blair as his role model.

Ferenc Gyurcsany will replace Peter Medgyessy, who resigned yesterday, and is expected to be approved by parliament in early September. He aims to revitalise his party and follow reformist centre-left policies similar to the UK leader.
