Overview: Car and banking fears reduce appetite for risk

Investor risk appetite suffered a marked deterioration on Monday as fears of bankruptcies in the US carmaking industry and fresh uncertainty about the global banking sector dented the recent mood of cautious optimism.

Equity and commodity prices fell sharply and credit spreads widened as investors sought the safety of government bonds, while the dollar and the yen, both perceived as havens in times of turbulence, gained ground.
