Global auto sales plumb fresh lows

Motor vehicle sales plumbed fresh lows round the world last month, adding to pressure on carmakers, their suppliers and dealers, writes Bernard Simon in Toronto .

All leading carmakers reported declines of more than 30 per cent in the US, the biggest market, compared with December 2007. Car sales in Japan, including buses, dropped 22 per cent to the lowest December level on record, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.
