China becomes earnings driver for Hutchison

Hutchison Whampoa, the conglomerate controlled by Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, noted on Thursday that China had become the biggest driver of its earnings, as the financial crisis rocked its global port, retail and telecoms units.

Mainland earnings accounted for 27 per cent of Hutchison’s earnings before interest and tax, reflecting a shift in the company’s global profit balance.
