EU hits UK, Belgium over financial transparency

Competition officials at the European Commission are threatening to take Britain and Belgium to the European Court of Justice over their failure to disclose financial information about large public organisations in the manufacturing sector.

They said on Thursday that the two countries were the only EU member states which had failed to comply with the financial transparency obligations under a 2005 EU directive, which had to be implemented at national level by late-2006.
