The growing importance of private equity as an asset class was underlined yesterday as a new index tracking the sector’s performance was unveiled by Standard & Poor’s, the ratings agency.

The S&P Listed Private Equity index will track 25 of the most liquid private equity companies from the US, Europe, Asia and the rest of the world.
