Thai police said on Friday that a suspected Russian arms dealer arrested in Bangkok in a US sting operation would be put on trial in Thailand before he would be extradited to the US for prosecution.

Viktor Bout, whose alleged exploits trafficking in weapons were the basis of a recent Hollywood film Lord of War, was arrested at a luxury hotel on Thursday afternoon, hours after his arrival on an Aeroflot flight from Moscow.
