Korean regulator warns banks of M&A danger

South Korea’s top financial regulator asked local banks on Thursday to refrain from trying to expand through acquisition because aggressive takeovers could destabilise financial markets unsettled by the credit crisis.

The comment, which came amid growing concern about the quality of banking assets in many countries, could limit expansion options for Korean banks at a time of stalled growth and an economic slowdown.
