Bedrock of deposits buttresses Canada's banks

Canada's economy and financial institutions are well-placed to withstand the crisis on its doorstep in the US, according to Jim Flaherty, the Canadian finance minister.

Referring to speculation that domestic banks and insurance companies might emerge as buyers of assets spun off by their troubled US counterparts, Mr Flaherty told the Financial Times that "the Canadian financial institutions are being used because of their stability. One can do business with them with some confidence".
