Delay hits hopes for Obama rescue plan

Barack Obama's emergency $775bn fiscal stimulus package to revive the contracting US economy is highly unlikely to be passed before he is inaugurated on January 20, congressional leaders warned yesterday.

Mr Obama, who on Saturday urged Congress to act "swiftly and boldly" to push through what he named the "American recovery and reinvestment plan", is due to meet Democratic and Republican leaders on Capitol Hill today to push the fiscal stimulus ahead.
