Chance for Syria to end isolation

The conflict in Lebanon is offering Syria a rare opportunity to break out of its international isolation, as some European governments start looking to Damascus to help resolve the crisis.

Ostracised by the world community since last year’s assassination of Rafiq Hariri, the Lebanese prime minister, Syria can now leverage its support for Hizbollah, the Lebanese Shia Islamist group fighting Israel, to reassert its regional role.
