Recruiters cut headcount as profits fall

The souring economic environment has hit the market for permanent jobs across the UK in the last quarter, causing profits to slide at both Hays and Michael Page, the two recruitment agencies said on Thursday.

The companies, which have a combined annual turnover of more than £3.3bn, have reduced their own headcount in line with the worsening jobs market, although both groups have registered less gloom in the market for temporary jobs in recent months.
