Last summer, Mexico City – 2,200 metres above sea level, more than 400km from the sea, and surrounded by mountains, had a new beach. Last week, the city, with an average daily temperature of 19°C in December, opened an ice rink.
The main square, the Zócalo, often the scene of popular uprisings and fenced in by the cathedral and the national palace, is now host to a 3,200 sq m outdoor ice rink, believed to be the world’s biggest.
