Record level of inequality hits Labour’s image

Labour’s recent record for improving living standards took a hit on Thursday with official figures showing barely any growth in after-tax incomes for average households in the five years before the recession started.

Bigger gains for higher-income families have also pushed inequality to the highest level since records began in 1961.
