Sarkozy calls for protection of European interests

Nicolas Sarkozy, France's president, yesterday called for the creation of European sovereign wealth funds to buy stakes in companies with low share prices and protect them from nonEuropean predators.

"Stock markets are at a historically low level. There could be an opportunity to create our own sovereign wealth funds, which would make it possible to defend national interests and European interests," Mr Sarkozy said at the European parliament.
