Embattled Baghdad sets out to build bridges with neighbours

When a US bipartisan commission called in December for direct US talks with Iran and Syria, the government in Baghdad was as disapproving of the idea as the White House.

Fearful that neighbours would end up dictating the course of Iraqi politics - yet also needing these states' help on security - the Iraqi government came up with a watered-down version of the proposal.
