European banks deny rush to raise capital

Leading banks in continental Europe on Tuesday insisted they did not need to take up the capital offered in the globally co-ordinated state rescue plans which are likely to see governments taking stakes in some of the biggest banks in the US and UK.

France’s biggest lenders, Crédit Agricole, BNP Paribas and Société Générale denied on Tuesday they needed to raise capital.
