Iceland asks Russia for €4bn after west refuses to help

Russia moved to strengthen strategic ties with Iceland yesterday by saying it would consider granting a €4bn loan to help ease the country's financial crisis, potentially weakening Reykjavik's traditional ties to the west.

Iceland lashed out at its allies in Europe for failing to provide support and indicated it would, in turn, move closer to Russia.
