Intel rolls out ‘data centre’ processor

Intel on Monday introduced a next-generation server chip that it says will let data centres be run more efficiently, with fewer servers needed and less power consumed.

The Xeon 5500, codenamed Nehalem, is expected to boost the trend towards cloud computing – where programs are run remotely from data centres – and appeal to companies looking for savings during the recession.
