Australian power privatisation plan collapses

A plan to privatise $8.6bn (A$10bn) worth of Australian power assets collapsed on Thursday after the state government of New South Wales abandoned a parliamentary vote at the eleventh hour after failing to secure enough support to pass necessary legislation.

The move could damage the state’s standing in the eyes of international investors and undermine confidence in the provincial Labor government led by Morris Iemma, premier.
