Danforth quits as US ambassador to United Nations

John Danforth is resigning as US ambassador to the United Nations, bringing to an end his brief tenure in New York. His unexpected move comes during a period of awkward relations between Washington and the international body.

Mr Danforth - whose surprise departure was confirmed by senior Bush administration officials and western diplomats late last night - was nominated just five months ago to replace John Negroponte, who is now the US ambassador to Baghdad.
