Peter Hain remained in the line of fire on Monday as a parliamentary inquiry was launched into his donation errors and the Conservatives stepped up the pressure on the embattled work and pensions secretary.
John Lyon, the commissioner for standards at the House of Commons, has ruled that Mr Hain has a “case to answer” over whether he failed to disclose more than £103,000 in donations towards his unsuccessful bid for the deputy leadership of the Labour party.
