Severstal, Russia’s biggest steelmaker, will expand its business in the US with the purchase of the Sparrows Point mill in the state of Maryland from ArcelorMittal for $810m.

The acquisition, expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2008, “reflects a significant strategic opportunity to add complementary assets and scale to Severstal’s existing US business,” the company said in a statement on Friday.
