Obama pledges to focus on Afghanistan

After a brief stopover in Kuwait on Saturday, Barack Obama could have been in Baghdad within two hours. Instead, he chose to make Afghanistan the first big destination of his week-long international tour.

The itinerary shows how Afghanistan has returned to the centre of the US political debate as it becomes clear that, while conditions in Iraq are improving, the original battleground in the “war on terror” has taken a sharp turn for the worse.
