US lead new offensive on Samarra

US and Iraqi forces launched a pre-dawn offensive into the rebel-held town of Samarra on Friday, killing more than 100 insurgents and capturing a further 37.

Qassem Daoud, Iraq's national security adviser, said US and Iraqi forces had established control over the town, an hour's journey north of Baghdad. US military sources said one US soldier had been killed and four others injured in fighting that continued unto early afternoon.
