Record numbers of Americans apply for government food aid

The effect of high food prices and the economic crisis on malnourishment is spreading beyond poor countries into the core of the developed world, Jacques Diouf, head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, has warned.

At least one in 10 Americans, a record 31.8m, receives food aid as the number of food stamp recipients jumped in December, the latest month for which data are available.
