Iran on Wednesday rejected the central tenet of a compromise over its nuclear programme, putting forward an alternative proposal even though the US says Tehran had signed up to the original deal.
Unless reversed, the statement by Manouchehr Mottaki, foreign minister, is likely to confirm the Obama administration in its shift of emphasis from engagement with Tehran to a push for new sanctions.
