US: Pain has not been avoided, simply delayed

For a good part of the past 14 months, as Wall Street and the banking industry were reeling from the credit crisis, the US economy slowed substantially, but did not fall off a cliff.

The unemployment rate has risen to 6.1 per cent, and employers shed jobs for nine consecutive months, but at a slower pace than in previous recessions.
