Soaring chip sales confound forecasts

Global semiconductor sales increased 13.2 per cent in the first quarter, confounding forecasts of a flat year for the industry.

The Semiconductor Industry Association reported sales of $55.3bn compared with $48.9bn in the first quarter of 2004. Sales increased 0.4 per cent from $55.1bn in the previous quarter.
