Wage gap widens as pay deals vary

A widening wage gap is emerging as some hard-pressed employers freeze pay while those tied to long-term wage deals pay inflation-busting increases, according to Incomes Data Services, the pay specialists .

Analysis of 58 pay settlements triggered in the three months to the end of January, covering 237,000 workers, revealed that the gap between the lowest settlements and those at the top has widened as the recession has deepened.
