Smiths rises on Bowman arrival

Smiths Group said that the appointment of Philip Bowman as chief executive did not prelude a break-up of the engineering conglomerate.

Confirmation on Wednesday that Mr Bowman was to succeed Keith Butler-Wheelhouse, chief executive for more than 10 years, prompted speculation about the future of a group that has underperformed the engineering sector for years. The shares rose 32p to £10.95.
