Tommy Hilfiger, the privately owned fashion house, is planning to open up to 10 stores a year in the US as the brand, which has fallen out of favour in its home market, attempts an American comeback.

The assault on the US comes as the company, which was taken private by Apax Partners in 2005 for $1.6bn, increased sales by 10 per cent in the year to March 31, to €1.37bn ($2.1bn), taking sales above the levels that the brand enjoyed at the height of its popularity in 2000. Hilfiger suffered sales and profit declines in the early noughties as the streetwear brand fell out of favour with American youth.
