Ford takes $2.4bn writedown for Volvo

Ford Motor said it was taking a $2.4bn writedown at Volvo, denting otherwise improved earnings at the Detroit-based carmaker and signalling serious challenges facing the luxury Swedish marque in the US, its biggest market.

Ford plans to cut Volvo’s output by 17 per cent in the current quarter, compared with a year earlier, mostly due to lower US sales.
