Supreme Court gives US companies armour against racketeering lawsuits

US companies yesterday got a new weapon to help them fight off costly racketeering lawsuits after the Supreme Court imposed new limits on civil suits under the notorious anti-Mafia law, Rico.

In two separate rulings the court responded to a growing controversy over the increased use of the civil provisions of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act (Rico), designed to stop organised crime from infiltrating legitimate businesses.
