CBI chief sees new order in business

The state will play a bigger role in the economy for years to come as the recession fundamentally changes the relationship between government and business, Richard Lambert, director-general of the CBI, has said.

Mr Lambert told the emp­loyers’ group’s annual north-west dinner in Manchester that the public finances were “rapidly deteriorating” and that there would have to be drastic cutbacks once the recession ended. That meant relying on business to deliver public services.
