UN Security Council toughens N Korea sanctions

The United Nations Security Council unanimously agreed a package of sanctions on Friday against North Korea that looked likely to ratchet up tension between Pyongyang and the outside world.

The vote by the 15-member council came amid reports that the isolated regime of Kim Jong-il might be planning a further missile or nuclear test as an act of defiance against the UN measures even before they come into force.
