Guantánamo Uighurs find freedom in Albania

Sitting in a Turkish restaurant in Tirana, Albania’s capital, Abu Bakker Qassim wants to talk about his plans to become an entrepreneur, not the three years he spent as a detainee at Guantánamo Bay.

Mr Qassim is one of five Chinese Uighurs cleared of suspected involvement in terrorism and granted asylum by Albania in 2006, after other countries refused to take them. “I left my home and family to make money as a trader but I got caught in a global political storm,” says Mr Qassim. “I’m still poor but I do have a future.”
