Papadopoulos defeat offers hope of Cyprus peace talks

Tassos Papadopoulos, the nationalist incumbent, was eliminated from Cyprus's presidential election race yesterday, opening the possibility of a new initiative to reunify the island.

A run-off vote next Sunday will pit Yiannakis Cassoulides, a European Parliament member and former foreign minister, against Demetris Christofias, the Cyprus communist party leader.
