Former Enron executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were convicted on Thursday of fraud and conspiracy for their role in the energy trader’s collapse, bringing a dramatic conclusion to a case that changed the face of US business.
The verdict provided the federal government with its most important victory in a five-year crackdown, which followed a white-collar crime wave that rattled investor confidence, wiped out thousands of jobs and destroyed billions of dollars in wealth.
