Republicans capture two state governorships

Republicans on Tuesday captured two state governorships, including the unseating of the Democratic incumbent in New Jersey, despite energetic efforts by President Barack Obama to secure him a second term.

Chris Christie, a former US attorney, defeated Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine in the New Jersey race. Earlier on Tuesday, Bob McDonnell beat Creigh Deeds, his Democratic rival, in Virginia.
