US housing market shows signs of life

A glimmer of hope appeared for the US housing market on Tuesday as the closely-watched index of pending home sales rose by 6.3 per cent in December from the previous month, rebounding from a record low as falling prices lured buyers.

The data, released by the National Association of Realtors, which reflect deals that have been signed but not completed, was better than economists expected. Pending home sales were up 2.1 per cent on the year.
